Sirobe Philosophy
My experience at a large, open admissions shelter has shown me the devastating effects irresponsible breeding can have on both humans and dogs. To that end, I take the commitment of breeding dogs very seriously. If you are looking to simply purchase a Basenji and are not looking for a relationship with your breeder, I am not the right breeder for you.

From birth, my puppies experience an extensive socialization program. Each puppy is handled on a daily basis, they are introduced to a variety of new people, novel objects and sounds, and begin house training and crate training at four to five weeks of age. Each litter is raised in the house and will stay with me until they are nine to ten weeks of age.

I strive to breed a Basenji who is not only true to the breed standard and will excel in the conformation ring, but one who will excel as a family companion. All breeding stock is tested for inheritable, genetic disease prior to breeding.

A Few Basenji Facts

Fact 1

Basenjis are a loyal, playful, independent and curious breed of dog. They are naturally clean with minimal dog odor and are known to be easily house trained. They seek warmth and can typically be found lying on heating vents, sitting next to a window where the sun is shining in or under the covers in their owner's bed.

Fact 2

When socialized early or raised in a home with kids, Basenjis are known to be tolerant with children. This is a busy dog who needs to investigate and know what is going on in his environment, however, they are not hyper. They are well equipped to go for a walk, jog, play in the backyard and then come in and relax on the couch.

Fact 3

Basenjis enjoy learning and do well when positive reinforcement training techniques are employed. While they are quick to learn new commands, they do not do well with repetition nor are they known for their exact response. Being a sighthound, very few have a reliable off leash response to commands and they should not be off leash in an area that is not securely fenced.

Fact 4

The Basenji is an independent thinker who will become destructive if not provided with appropriate mental and physical exercise. Many are escape artists, climbing out of fenced-in areas, and some are known to be dog aggressive. Many people are attracted to the breed because they are known as the "barkless dog". While Basenjis do not have the ability to repetitively bark, they are not silent. They will yodel/chortle when they are excited and will scream when they are frustrated or startled.

Fact 5

This is a primitive breed whose peculiar traits and aloof personality make them a challenge for many families. The Basenji will thrive in a home where the owner enjoys a dog who can live alongside the family. Owners looking for constant adoration, ease of training with precise obedient responses and a strong "desire to please" will find a more suitable companion in another breed. The Basenji thrives on a consistent and well structured environment. A commitment to training and socialization throughout the dog's life is a must.
